Last year, more than 18,000 volunteers collected more than 56,000 bags of garbage while cleaning up more than 13,700 kilometres of Alberta roads
Volunteers will be out cleaning up and sprucing up area highways this weekend.
The annual highway cleanup will take place on Saturday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The cleanup usually takes place in the spring but this year it was postponed due to COVID-19.
Organizations such as 4-H clubs, Scouts and Girl Guides, schools, church groups and other non-profits earn $100 per kilometre cleaned.
Motorists are asked to watch for the volunteers – who will be wearing orange safety vests – and slow down, obey signs and use caution while passing the cleanup crews.
Last year, 740 volunteer organizations were involved in the highway clean-up, tackling 13,700 kilometres of Alberta road
