Warm weather is causing ice to melt, creating safety concerns at an ice crossing
Effective immediately, the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is temporarily closed. Warm weather has reduced the ice thickness at the east crossing over the Des Rocher River and it is currently not safe for vehicle traffic.
Reopening the winter road as soon as possible is a priority, but the opening is heavily dependent on weather and the progress crews make ensuring the road is safe and accessible. Crews continue to work seven days a week and monitor ice thickness daily.
At this time, it is uncertain how long the winter road could be temporarily closed. Updates will be provided as they become available.
It is extremely dangerous to use the winter road when it’s closed
Please remember that travelling on the winter road when it’s closed is strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous. Motorists using the winter road when it’s closed are putting themselves and others at risk of a serious incident. This also has the potential to delay the reopening of the road.
