McMurray Métis Break Ground on $22 Million Cultural Centre

The McMurray Métis hosted an historic event with a groundbreaking ceremony on their Métis Cultural Centre. The first of its kind in Northern Alberta and Canada’s West, the Centre will highlight the important role Métis have in our Province and Nation.
 
The stunning Centre and surrounding grounds will be built on the highly accessible, MacDonald Island, which has deep roots to the Métis culture dating back generations.
 
Developed, owned and operated by McMurray Métis, the new Cultural Centre will quickly become a pivotal place in the Wood Buffalo region for sharing traditional knowledge, skills training, and collaboration with stakeholders of all kinds – enhancing the lives of Métis in Alberta.
 
The Métis Cultural Centre received approval from Infrastructure Canada through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for 75 % of total eligible costs, up to $16,500,000. McMurray Métis is also contributing at a minimum $5,500,000. towards the Centre.
 
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo sold just over 8 acres of land on MacDonald Island to McMurray Métis to build the Métis Cultural Centre.
 
The $22 million facility is scheduled to open in 2023.
