Featuring Indigenous talent local to Treaty 6, pêhonân is part of Fringe Theatre’s ongoing commitment to centering and uplifting Indigenous nations and providing opportunities to Indigenous artists.

Encouraging bravery and artistic risk-taking, this series gives Indigenous artists one performance slot to try something new. Through mentorship and artistic exploration, pêhonân is an incubator. What begins at pêhonân could grow into a full touring show by next year. You may see it in a Lottery or Bring Your Own Venue spot at next year’s Festival. Or, you may even see it as part of Fringe’s season.

This series features eight unique performances. All shows are “Offer What You Will.” You may offer any dollar amount you’re able to contribute, or you can offer other non-monetary ways of showing respect and mutual investment, such as tobacco, your own art, or a gift you feel the artist(s) will benefit from. No one will be turned away. This year, the pêhonân Series will happen at the ATB Outdoor Stage in ATB Park, in the beautiful ᐄᓃᐤ (ÎNÎW) River Lot 11∞ Indigenous Art Park, and around the TeePee in the heart of the Festival grounds.

Join us at 6pm at the TeePee every Friday and Saturday during the Festival! Fresh Bannock and a group smudge will welcome us into a sharing circle. Let’s get to know one another as fellow fringers. Then stay for back-to-back performances featuring amazing local Indigenous artists.

The pêhonân Series will also feature pop-up conversations livestreamed on FringeTV. Stay tuned for these not-to-be-missed chats!
