Wood Buffalo Empty Bowls Fundraiser

Sunday, August 28th, 2022

Time
11:00am - 7:00pm
Venue
Heritage Shipyard, Fort McMurray

The event, scheduled for Aug 28, is used to raise money for the organization and spreading awareness about food insecurity in the community

This year’s event returns to the ticket model used before the COVID-19 pandemic. Tickets will cost $20. People attending can choose from more than 600 bowls created by the Fort McMurray Potters Guild and painted by community members.

People can sample foods from all vendors, which will be announced in upcoming weeks. The event will include music, entertainment, activities for kids and a 50/50 draw.

WBFB executive director Dan Edwards said the organization hopes to raise around $25,000. While the event brings in money, it also raised awareness about the food bank’s role in the community, he said.

Demand for the organization’s services has been increasing continuously in recent years, said Edwards. The food bank is fully booked almost every day and the organization is still seeing new people ask for help.

“There’s inflation, there’s rising cost of fuel, rising cost of groceries, rising cost of living… and those are all factors that play into need and the only thing that really isn’t rising is wages,” he said. “As your costs go up and your income stays the same, it gets problematic and so we are seeing a lot of people needing to access us for a little bit more assistance.”

Rising costs also impact what WBFB is able to provide to people. Edwards said store partners give the organization the best deals possible, but WBFB has to find ways to stretch dollars further.

Edwards said the organization continues building partnerships with grocery stores for more donations and new food sources. This includes damaged boxes that can’t be sold but the product is still good, meat that needs to be frozen, and produce that is still good but isn’t being bought because it doesn’t look like it’s from a commercial.

The food bank also continues to face problems with the global supply chain. Sometimes the organization puts in orders that don’t arrive.

WBFB has a high need right now for canned fruit, canned meats, coffee, tea and jams.
