“Today is a recognition that Metis communities and their leadership from various parts of our homeland see a common path, one that we want to take together”
At a signing ceremony held July 21, representatives of the Alberta Métis Federation (AMF) and the Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) inked a memorandum of understanding that formalizes cooperation towards several goals that are critical to Métis Nation Citizens across the Métis Nation Homeland and of significant importance to all Canadians.
Amongst other things, this agreement states that the two will partner to defend our Métis Nation identity, promote the exercise of Section 35 rights across provincial boundaries, and to work on other opportunities and priorities as they arise. This MOU emphasizes the importance of mutual support to protect the future of the Métis Nation.
“Today is a recognition that Metis communities and their leadership from various parts of our homeland see a common path, one that we want to take together, So at present, I must say, we are a house that’s divided, divided by distance geographically and by politics. The Alberta Metis Federation was established with a simple vision that Metis people in Alberta be represented by grassroots leadership with accountability, transparency and as much as possible community level engagement” - Diane Scoville, chairperson of the Alberta Metis Federation
“Since the days of buffalo hunting, our ancestors we have been known as ‘the people who own themselves.’ Many sacrificed their lives to protect our families, our rights, and our way of life. We see this MOU as continuing in these traditions and as an opportunity to renew the bonds of kinship and alliance across our Métis Nation Homeland,” said MMF President David Chartrand.
One of the first steps will be to meet and discuss mutual priorities and new ways to work together. This MOU promotes partnering to pursue legal, cultural, economic, business, and other mutually agreeable opportunities. As outlined in the MOU, one of the key priorities will be cooperating to strengthen the nation-to-nation and government-to-government relationships between Canada and the Métis Nation.
The signing ceremony was held at Edmonton's Chateau Louis Hotel, following an opening prayer.
