Heading into the 2022-2023 school year, Edmonton public students will have National Indigenous Peoples Day off.
The board of Edmonton Public Schools has approved National Indigenous Peoples Day as a day off in school for the 2022-2023 year.
In order to cover off the holiday, a proposed professional development day on May 19, 2023, was moved to June 21, 2023, also known as National Indigenous Peoples’ Day and summer solstice, and approved by trustees during a board meeting Tuesday.
The move comes after Edmonton residents advocated for the school calendar to be more inclusive and include a variety of important days including Yom Kippur, Bandi Chhor Divas and Diwali, winter solstice, Eid-al Fitr, Eid-al-Adha, National Indigenous Peoples Day and summer solstice.
Of the days requested, only four happened on a school day and the proposed calendar was only able to approve one of the days.
