Vilna School serves communities in Smoky Lake County, along with Whitefish (Goodfish) Lake First Nation and Saddle Lake Cree Nation
Smoky Lake RCMP are investigating what they're calling "deliberate mischief" to a tipi.
On Tuesday Oct.19 at around 10:45 am, Police received reports of a tipi that had been damaged on the grounds of Vilna School.
When they arrived on scene, officers found that an accelerant had likely been used to spread the fire.
The tipi suffered significant damage and, as a result, will not be safe for use by the school or the community. Police say there was no damage found to the school building or surrounding grounds.
Anyone who may have information about the damage is asked to call the Smoky Lake RCMP at 780-656-3550 or Crime Stoppers.
Vilna is located approximately 130 kilometres northeast of Fort Saskatchewan and has a population of about 210 students enrolled from pre-school to Grade 12.
