“We really want to give caregivers the dignity of getting to choose their own gift for their kids, caregivers know their kids best. Through the Family Gift Centre, they can choose a gift specifically for their child or the kids in their lives.”
The Mustard Seed in Edmonton is hosting their 6th Annual Family Gift Centre, December 7th and 8th.
At this year’s event, community members living in poverty or who are experiencing homelessness are invited to shop for toys for the young ones in their lives for only a toonie.
The gift centre gives customers a sense of dignity.
"The reason we sell them for $2 and don’t give them away for free is that we want those individuals to have the chance to choose something, to pick it out, and to have the integrity to say to those kids 'I got this for you, I picked this for you, I bought this for you.'"
Any money raised goes to buying more toys for the event.
The Mustard Seed is also calling on Edmontonians to donate unwrapped toys and gifts to the Family Gift Centre, to make the event a reality. Gifts for kids aged zero to 18 years old are welcome, with examples including stuffed animals for toddlers, dolls and crafts for kids aged four to seven, Lego sets and computer games for kids aged eight to 12, and makeup and sportswear for teenagers aged 13+.
Anyone who wants to donate new toys for children 0-18 can drop them off at 10568 114 Street between 8am - 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
Please bring donations to the back of the building
