Wood Buffalo RCMP make arrest after shelter in place issued in Abasand subdivision

“Police did not believe there was any risk to the public throughout the incident,” said a statement from Wood Buffalo RCMP

Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to calls of a male with a firearm in the Abasand subdivision early Tuesday morning.

Officers arrived at the location at roughly 2:15 a.m. where the individual isolated himself in a nearby wooded area and eventually surrendered to police.

At 7:45 a.m., RCMP issued a shelter in place, requesting that residents in the Abasand area remain in their homes, and non-residents were asked not to enter.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo canceled its transit route 7 into Abasand during that time.

Wood Buffalo RCMP spokesperson Cst. Karen Brookins said the man remains in police custody as their investigation continues. The suspect has not been named because he has yet to be charged. Brookins could not give details about what “suspicious activity” was reported to police.
